Jackie Robinson was the first ever colored man to play in the Major League Baseball. He was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers by Branch Rickey in 1947. He retired in 1956 after nine seasons with the team. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. Ten years later Jackie Robinson died of a heart attack in 1972.
